Back Knee Down

Surfers! How rad is this? It’s one of my favourite surfer pics of late. In fact it’s beyond rad.

-Taken from the cover of Surfers Journal Oct-Nov 2012.
-Location? Indo secret spot.
-Photographer? Mick Curley.
-The surfer? Brad Gerlach.
-Tow in? Nope.

At 46 years of age, Gerlach is charging. The former world number 2 surfer also has an eye for technical detail and efficient body mechanics.

What I want you to see in this image is his back knee being pushed down towards the water. Note that his back knee is bent more than his front and it’s low to the water.

The effect of this is that the heels lift, his toes are weighted, the rail is tipped to edge, the rocker is engaged and therefore the board turns. Elegantly. Stylishly. Effortlessly.

I actually teach this skill to learner beginners on their second lesson. It’s surf turn 101.

Push your back knee down towards the water. This will turn your board.

Longboarder, SUP, shortboarder, novice, kook, shredder, 46 year old legend. Doesn’t matter. Remember – less is more!

Don’t be fooled by the simplicity of it – just push your rear knee down and you’ll be cooking with gas.
